Responding to The Psalms – January 2024

A project of the Spirituality Committee of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales

“It may be helpful to think of the psalms as ‘a very old building’ that has been lived in by a family for several centuries or as a college at an ancient university which has been inhabited by a community of students and teachers for half a millennium or more. In the course of time many features of this building have been altered or their original functions been forgotten; and they have been put to different purposes. So when the psalmist talks of my enemies, for example, we are no longer in touch with their original reference, and sometimes it is easier to pray such verses as a reference to those inner thoughts which upset us or alienate us. The great thing about living in such a building is its sense of lived history and as you walk around this astonishing edifice that is the Psalms, it may be helpful to be inspired by other members of the community who have prayed there before you.”              Nicholas King sj The Bible Kevin Mayhew 2013 p.1043

We offer the Sunday Responsorial Psalm as a focus for prayer and reflection during the week ahead for yourself or share with others. You could note your own thoughts as a possible personal journal.
