HISTORIC CHURCHES
Historic Churches Committee
A new website is available for details of all listed Catholic churches, chapels and other places of worship in England and Wales. The site has a separate listing for all Dioceses. Follow this link to the Diocese of Hallam page https://catholic-historic-churches.org.uk/committees/hallam/churches.
Catholic churches and chapels that are either listed buildings or within conservation areas are exempt from state planning controls affecting buildings not used for worship, however that does not mean there is no control over any plans for alterations. Instead, they are regulated by the local Diocesan Historic Churches Committee.
The Historic Churches Committee works according to principles laid down in the Directory on the Ecclesiastical Exemption from Listed Building Control and must follow ‘due process,’ which includes consulting with English Heritage, the national amenity societies and the relevant local planning authorities, before it can grant the equivalent of Listed Building Consent.
The Historic Churches Committee is supported by the work of the Patrimony sub-committee of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales, which has guidance for those responsible for listed churches and chapels.
The Bishops’ Conference has also published guidance on the alteration, conservation and maintenance of the Church’s places of worship in its document Consecrated for worship, which brings together material from the liturgical books of the Roman Rite and the teaching documents and guidelines of the Holy See, applying and developing that teaching to the particular circumstances of the Church in England and Wales.
Application forms for carrying out work on listed churches or chapels used for Catholic worship can be found here.
