Using Widgit Symbols to Promote Inclusion in the Church

Widgit symbols are simple colourful pictures that represent single concepts, and are used to support people with their communication, understanding and engagement. They can be adapted and personalised for an individual or group. They have been used at St Vincent’s Church, Crookes during the past year to support individuals to follow the Mass, in the Liturgy for Children and in labelling key areas in the Church, for example. They will be part of the resources available for the First Communion programme in 2026. Hallam Diocese may consider purchasing licences for parishes to produce their own materials if there is enough interest. Please contact the Formation and Mission Team if this is something you would like to develop in your parish. Katharine Ryan-Murray
