There are two formal courses with qualifications, supported by this Diocese, offering talks and workshops on Theology, Church teaching, Prayer, Scripture and Faith in action. These are the:
1. Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies (CCRS)
And
2. Loyola Certificate in Pastoral Ministry

There is a Library at the Hallam Pastoral Centre with many books and resources of interest on Theology, Scripture, Pastoral Studies, Catechesis, Religious Education, Spirituality, Religious Life, Biographies of Holy Women and Men, Feminist Theology, Ecumenism, The Church, Papal Documents (Including the Documents of vatican II). Most of these are available for loan though some are for reference only. If you are unable to visit but would like to borrow a particular book, please get in touch and we will try to help. Our mission is to encourage and help anyone and everyone to learn more about and develop a deeper understanding of the Christian faith. We do this through:
- Courses and qualifications such as the Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies (CCRS) and the Loyola Certificate in Pastoral Minstry.
- Supporting Church initiatives such as the Year of the Word: God Who Speaks.
- Public talks and workshops on theology, Church teaching and Christian living.
- Resources such as the Hallam Pastoral Centre library and on-line materials.
- Making use of the skilled lay, religious and ordained people engaged in this work in the diocese and beyond.
- Working with deaneries and parishes to develop learning and resources at the local level.
- Representing Hallam at regional and national bodies.
Anyone is welcome to take part in our courses and events, including people from other Christian denominations, other faiths and people of no faith.
We are providing support, resources and encouragement and are keen to share more widely the variety of Good News and Events going on in parishes. Get Involved 'Expressions of interest' are welcome. If you are interested in teaching on a course or leading an event for your parish or community with us, please get in touch with your ideas, and we can arrange to discuss this further.

The CCRS and other courses are delivered by a diverse group of lay and ordained tutors with relevant academic qualifications, pastoral experience and teaching skills.
External speakers may be invited for study days and courses.
If you are interested in teaching on one of our courses, or leading a course for your parish or community, please get in touch with the department, giving details of your areas of interest and training, qualifications and experience. We will be happy to hold an “expression of interest” on file and get in touch with you if a suitable opportunity arises.

The Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University offers a number of useful outreach resources, including videos, podcasts, and regular talks and events, in additional to world-leading research and teaching in Catholic theology.
Our ecumenical colleagues in the Anglican Diocese of Sheffield have an extensive range of local or online courses and resources in their virtual St Peter's College. Many of which are suitable for a Catholic context and may be available for registration. If you are unsure as to the suitability, or whether it is possible to register for a particular course, please contact Dr Greg Ryan in the Hallam Adult Formation team.
Another ecumenical partner is UTU, which has formed many active members of Hallam Diocese over the years. They have resources and courses focussed on practical mission and contextual theology If you are unsure as to the suitability, or whether it is possible to register for a particular course, please contact the Formation and Mission team.
Bible Society has partnered with the Catholic Church in England and Wales to produce resources for the Year of the Word : The God Who Speaks, ant their website contains a wealth of useful material about the bible for beginners and experienced readers alike.
Religious Education Service. The Catholic RES has a number of resources available on their website, aimed particularly at schools.
Catholiclisteners, is a confidential helpline. The service which is part of the Diocese of Westminster, has been set up for those who are returning to the faith as well as to support those who need someone to talk to. The helpline is all about listening to others, listening to those who might have become isolated due to the pandemic. This service is based on the Landings ethos of compassionate listening. Although not a counselling service, there is a professional team trained in signposting callers to other services and agencies.
