Serving Christ in a Hostile Environment

Fr Damian Howard, provincial of the Jesuits in Britain, came to the parish of Christ the Eternal High Priest at Gidea Park on 10th June 2023 to lead a study day entitled ‘Serving Christ in a Hostile Environment’. A good crowd attended in person, while others watched on-line.

In an increasingly secular and polarised society how can faith make its voice heard and make a difference? In the first part of the study day Fr Damian explored the account of the ‘sinner woman’ in Luke 7, showing how Jesus confronted the hostile environment at the supper in the house of Simon. Fr Damian then focussed on the teaching of Pope Francis above all in Laudato si. Francis shows a way of addressing the real problems at issue. The ‘technocratic paradigm’ which selfishly dominates human activity calls for a ‘revolution of tenderness’ and the promotion of non-violence.

A recording of the talks is now available in the Study days section of the What Good News Website
