Ø Wednesday 18 November 2020, 2.00pm-3.00pm – Contextual Safeguarding Strategy - Kevin Stevens, Service Manager, Amber Project

Exploitation and abuse of children, young people and vulnerable adults through contextual safeguarding is not new, but we know that the traditional responses and child protection system is inadequate and inappropriate for safeguarding those whose experience of exploitation and abuse is extra-familial.

Children and young people are vulnerable in different ways, at different ages, they may be vulnerable to exploitation including sexual, physical and emotional abuse in different contexts; exploitation by criminal gangs and organised crime groups; trafficking; online abuse; and the influences of extremism leading to radicalisation.

This presents a challenge to all partner agencies and requires a system change to better safeguard this group of children and young people and to support front-line staff to implement new approaches. It requires effective partnership with services that are not traditionally linked to child protection, including housing, community safety and environmental services. A Contextual Safeguarding Strategy has been developed. It sets out our collaborative arrangements to ensure that preventative and protective mechanisms are safeguarding young people from harm, and for supporting victims.

This masterclass will provide an understanding of:

1. Contextual Safeguarding Risks – Primary and Secondary presenting issues

2. Who the strategy is for

3. How the strategy will make a difference.

4. What’s in the strategy

5. The 4 P approach

6. The action plan
