Matthew Flinders is a professor of politics at the University of Sheffield who specialises in innovations in public participation.  Although the current Catholic Church synod on synodality is explicitly not a political and democratic process, nor a synod like those of CofE, there is much we might learn from the secular world about how, what, what outcomes to expect, what pitfalls need to be navigated during the synodal process. In this informal discussion, Matthew will reflect upon his research in order to nurture a conversation about the ‘gaps, traps and potential pitfalls’ of engagement processes. The aim being to simply support and enrich thinking about how the various strands of the current synod process might reach out to embrace a very wide community in a positive way.
